A Day in the Life of a Stability Nurse: Kolbi

To continue our celebration of our nurses throughout the month of May, we got a peek at what a day in the life of a Stability Nurse looks like. Stability Recruiter, Nima, worked with Kolbi to find out how she has been spending her time in Santa Clara.

I graduated from an ADN program in northern California in 2012 and in my last semester my brother got in a car accident and became a T-11/T-12 paraplegic so I moved back to my home state of Montana to be with my family and started nursing as a new graduate in the ICU where my parents had been nurses in for 15 years. After 5 years I decided that I couldn’t handle the 8 months of winter so I started travel nursing in spring of 2017 in San Jose, California and have done 3 contracts here now. I am currently between contracts and will be starting in southern California next week.

I joined Stability on my second contract at Santa Clara Kaiser and extended for a total of 6 months. My weekly gross pay was $2790 a week. Living in the Silicone Valley can be expensive. I was renting a room in a 3 bedroom house for $2100 a month including utilities and furnishing.

11:00 am

On a normal Saturday a group of us would usually meet up for brunch at Mimosas. It is know for its brunch menu and giant delicious mimosas! My favorite is the eggs Benedict with the peach mimosa and it totals about $22. After, we would uber home $10 and relax for a bit and get any household chores done.

5:00 pm

After brunch we would either go to the “city” San Francisco or Oakland and hang out for the day or we would stay in San Jose and meet up at San Pedro Square downtown. An uber from my house was about $8 each way. San Pedro Square is an area with many shops, bars, food places, and has a very eclectic mix of people and things to do. We would bar hop and listen to live music early in the night and depending on the mood maybe go to one of the near by clubs and dance all night meeting new people and planning new adventures. Entry can be either free or up to $10 depending on the DJ and if its live music, a beer is about $4.

1:30 am

We usually stay out till about 1:30 am then walk over to the local taco or papusa (about $8-13 depending what you order) place and eat before going home for the night in uber $8.

Total for the day: Around $70.
